Silverman is honored at Dana-Farber for leadership excellence
Lewis B. Silverman, M.D., a Newton native, director of the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, was honored with the 1999 Stephen E. Sallan Leadership Award in Pediatric Oncology.
This annual award, which is named after Dana-Farber's chief-of-staff, Stephen E. Sallan, M.D., is given to a member of the pediatric staff for their ability to guide, inspire and motivate others. It was established in 1994 by Charles and Rowena Simberg of Scottsdale, AZ and awards the recipient with $5,000 to be used to continue their professional education or engage in clinical or basic research.
Described by staff as a compassionate leader, Silverman is the supervisor of a large contingent of nurse practitioners and pediatric fellows in training to become oncologists. In addition to researching new treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) - the most common form of childhood cancer - Silverman is currently involved in the development of a new international treatment protocol for infants with ALL. He also heads a multidisciplinary committee designed to improve patient care quality within the clinic.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (www.dana-farber.org) is among the leading cancer research and care facilities in the United States, and is the only center in New England to be both a federally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a Center for AIDS Research.
