Reid Ponte appointed new Chief of Nursing and Patient Care Services at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Patricia Reid Ponte, R.N., D.N.Sc., nursing director at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a practicing nurse for 25 years, has been appointed chief of Nursing and Patient Care Services at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She will assume her new position in early September.

Reid Ponte will play a major role in decisions affecting inpatient and outpatient oncology services. She will oversee 278 full-time staff and ensure coordination of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's and Brigham and Women's Hospital's multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care.

"It's a wonderful position," says Reid Ponte, who has spent her nursing career in the Boston area. "To serve in an academic environment like this, and at such an excellent institution with an important cause and a dedicated staff, is an incredible opportunity."

Dana-Farber President David G. Nathan, M.D., praised Reid Ponte for her leadership skills, collaborative management style, and dedication to delivering compassionate cancer care in partnership with patients and families. "We are delighted that Pat has decided to help us provide the finest care around, and to support our work toward eliminating cancer and related diseases."

Reid Ponte joined Brigham and Women's Hospital in 1989 and has been nursing director since 1992. In that position she has managed up to 750 nurses and support staff. Among her accomplishments at BWH are expanding educational programs for nurses and leading interdisciplinary efforts to improve the areas of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Materials Management.

Born in Boston and raised in Somerville, Reid Ponte now lives in Arlington with her husband and two sons.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (www.dana-farber.org) is among the leading cancer research and care facilities in the United States and is the only center in New England to be both a federally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and Center for AIDS Research.
