Golf tournament and dinner/auction to benefit prostate cancer research
Friends of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute host 5th P.A.R.T. Golf Classic, Sept. 12
MASHPEE, Mass. — A day of golf on a beautiful course, a delicious dinner, and the chance to bid on exciting items constitute a perfect day for many. That is exactly what will happen on Monday, Sept. 12, at the 5th Annual P.A.R.T (Prostate Awareness for Research and Treatment) Golf Classic at the Willowbend Golf Club in Plymouth, Mass. This fundraiser benefits Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the hopes of creating another perfect day — the day people no longer have to fear prostate cancer.
The Golf Classic, beginning with a round of golf and ending with dinner and an auction, will benefit P.A.R.T., an initiative by the Friends of Dana-Farber to help find a cure for prostate cancer. P.A.R.T. provides funds for investigators conducting prostate cancer research. Friends members' Midge Lipkin and Arlene Tofias, two of the event's co-chairs, founded P.A.R.T. in 1998 as both their husbands were prostate cancer survivors.
P.A.R.T. provides funds for investigators conducting prostate cancer research. "Each year prostate cancer kills more than 30,000 males and more than 180,000 new cases are diagnosed," said Lipkin of Belmont and New Seabury, Mass. "The Friends recognized that prostate cancer affects families everywhere," added Tofias of Wayland and Falmouth, Mass. "We hope to fund research that will ultimately help to save lives and perhaps wipe out this dreaded disease."
Linda Gates and Richard Oresman, both of Mashpee, are the two other co-chairs who have helped make this event so successful. Like many members of P.A.R.T., they understand the benefit of this program. "P.A.R.T. members are concerned about themselves, their husbands, loved ones, and friends who have been or could be affected by prostate cancer," explains Oresman. "The event raises funds that will enhance the P.A.R.T fellowship program to attract the best and brightest doctors and scientists who are dedicated to prostate cancer research and care of those with the disease."
Last year's tournament and dinner/auction raised more than $250,000 for Dana- Farber and in the four-year history of the event, more than $1.25 million has been raised.
The day does not end when the last ball rolls into the cup. Dinner and an auction offering a wide array of trips and items follow the day's play.
The tournament's entry fee, which includes a round of golf, gifts, dinner, and live and silent auctions, is $550 for each golfer. Tickets for the dinner and auctions only are available for $100 per person. There is also a nine-hole tournament or a Willowbend House tour for the non-18 hole golfers.
