U.S.News & World Report ranks Dana-Farber as New England's top cancer hospital
Institute named one of the nation's best cancer centers
For the fifth straight year, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has been rated the top cancer hospital in New England and the fourth best in the nation by U.S.News & World Report. The rankings, part of the magazine's annual America's Best Hospitals guide, will be published in the July 18 issue.
"Being recognized as one of the nation's leading cancer centers is a direct reflection of the commitment and collective efforts of our caregivers, scientists, staff, board members, and partner hospitals to reduce and eliminate the burden of cancer," said Edward J. Benz, Jr., MD, president of Dana-Farber. "Our ultimate goal is to conquer cancer. Until that happens, we are focused on providing the best possible care, conducting novel research into better therapies and prevention methods, and training the next generation of cancer experts."
U.S.News & World Report publishes the hospital guide each year as a reference for patients who are reviewing their medical care options. RTI International in Triangle Park, N.C. produced the 2005 rankings, which are based on a methodology devised at the University of Chicago.
In addition to cancer, the guide ranks medical facilities in 16 other specialties. The overall score is based equally on professional reputation, mortality rates, and a grouping of care-related factors such as nursing levels and technology services.
Dana-Farber provides adult oncology care in partnership with Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center, a comprehensive service that combines the expertise of Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dana-Farber's extensive pediatric oncology services are offered in conjunction with Children's Hospital Boston through Dana-Farber/Children's Cancer Care.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (www.dana-farber.org) is a principal teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and is among the leading cancer research and care centers in the United States. It is a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute.
